Ray Harryhausen: The Early Years Collection

Presented here for the first time ever is the authorized collection of Ray's earliest work including: Little Red Riding Hood (1949), Rapunzel (1951), Hansel and Gretel (1951), King Midas (1953), and The Tortoise and the Hare (2002), which was an unfinished project — until now! In 2002, Ray completed the project with the help of Seamus Walsh and Marc Caballero, two young animators who expressed an interest in finishing it with Ray's input.

Plus with hours of supplemental features, this is a "must-have item" for any true Harryhausen fan.

The Fantastic Films of Ray Harryhausen -
Legendary Monster Series

This box set contains the following, which is some of Ray's best fantasy films. See below for information on each film, which came be purchased individually.

Jason and the Argonauts

The 7th Voyage of Sinbad

The Golden Voyage of Sinbad

Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger

The 3 Worlds of Gulliver

Jason and the Argonauts

Jason has been prophesied to take the throne of Thessaly. When he saves Pelias from drowning, but does not recognize him as the man who had earlier killed his father, Pelias tells Jason to travel to Colchis to find the Golden Fleece. Jason follows his advice and assembles a sailing crew of the finest men in Greece, including Hercules. They are under the protection of Hera, queen of the gods. Their voyage is replete with battles against harpies, a giant bronze Talos, a hydra, and an animated skeleton army, all brought to life by the special-effects wizardry of Ray Harryhausen.

The 7th Voyage of Sinbad

When the evil magician Sokurah shrinks Princess Parisa to roughly half the size of a Barbie doll, only one thing can restore her: the egg of a Roc. The Roc, of course, is a gigantic bird that lives on the remote island of Colossa. Sinbad hires a crew of mutiny-minded convicts and sets sail, Sokurah in tow, but runs afoul of a fire-breathing dragon, a very ticked-off Cyclops, and an equally crabby two-headed mutant Roc. This swashbuckling adventure was the first installment of the Sinbad films, and decades later it still has the power to hold viewers spellbound. Thatcher is terrific as the sinister, shaven-headed Sokurah, mugging perfectly for the camera, and Mathews is suitably dashing as Sinbad.

The Golden Voyage of Sinbad

Sinbad and his crew intercept a homunculus carrying a golden tablet. Koura, the creator of the homunculus and practitioner of evil magic, wants the tablet back and pursues Sinbad. Meanwhile Sinbad meets the Vizier who has another part of the interlocking golden map, and they mount a quest across the seas to solve the riddle of the map, accompanied by a slave girl with a mysterious tattoo of an eye on her palm. They encounter strange creatures, tempests, and the dark interference of Koura along the way.

Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger

Sinbad must deliver a prince transformed into a monkey to the lands of the Ademaspai to restore him to his human form in time for his coronation. On the way he must contend with the evil witch Zenobia, her son and their magic, and several nasty-looking Ray Harryhausen creatures.

The 3 Worlds of Gulliver

Shipwrecked, Dr. Gulliver, soon finds himself in contact with both the diminutive Lilliputians and the gigantic Brobdingnagians.

Clash of the Titan

Perseus has to rescue Andromeda, before she has to marry a monster. Zeus has set up a few tests for Perseus on the way, like capturing Pegasus, defeating Medusa, and finding a way to kill the dreaded Kraken.

Mighty Joe Young

Jill Young has brought up her pet gorilla since she was a child. Twelve years later, when the gorilla is fully grown, Hollywood promoter Max O'Hara travels to Tanzania, Africa, and convinces Jill to bring her extraordinarily large gorilla, Joe, back to America. While in Hollywood, Joe is used in a stage production and is exploited to no end. It doesn't take long until Joe is sick of being mistreated and he escapes to run loose in civilization.

Beast From 20,000 Fathoms

As a result of an arctic nuclear test, a carnivorous dinosaur thaws out and starts making its way down the east coast of North America. Professor Tom Nesbitt, only witness to the beast's existence, is not believed, even when he identifies it as a "rhedosaurus" to paleontologist Thurgood Elson. All doubts disappear, however, when Elson is swallowed whole during an oceanic bathysphere excursion to search for the creature. Soon thereafter the rhedosaurus emerges from the sea and lays waste to Manhattan Island until Nesbitt comes up with a plan to try to stop the seemingly indestructible beast.

The Valley of Gwangi

Cowboy James Franciscus seeks fame and fortune by capturing a Tyrannosaurus Rex living in the Forbidden Valley and putting it in a Mexican circus. His victim, called the Gwangi, turns out to have an aversion to being shown in public. Another film featuring the stop-action special-effects talents of Ray Harryhausen.

One Million Years B.C.

Caveman Tumak is banished from his savage tribe. He finds a brief home among a group of gentle seacoast dwelling cave people until he is banished from them as well. Missing him, one of their women, Loana leaves with him, deciding to face the harsh prehistoric world with its monsters and volcanos as a couple.

The Animal World

The Ray Harryhausen-Willis O'Brien dinosaur sequence from THE ANIMAL WORLD, with a brief introduction by Ray Harryhausen taped in 2003, may be found on the Warner Home Video release of Willis O'Brien's THE BLACK SCORPION. For legal reasons, THE ANIMAL WORLD may never be released on DVD in its entirety.
